Marathon FAQs
What is a good marathon time?
Many runners in a marathon aim for a time of less than 4 hours, though anything less than 4 and a half hours is generally considered a decent time.
How long is a marathon?
A marathon is 26 miles and 385 yards (26.2 miles), or 42.195 kilometres.
Can I run a marathon without training?
Technically, it’s possible to run a marathon without training, especially if you already have some level of fitness. However, it’s widely recommended that you undertake some sort of training in the lead up to a marathon. This will help you avoid injury, assist in your recovery time, and increase your performance (and time) on the day. It’s a big race and can be demanding on your body and mind, so training can greatly improve your chance of success.
What is the average time for a first marathon?
On average, first-time marathoners will have a time of between 5 hours and 6.5 hours. But if you have spent a lot of time training, your time may well be faster. If you place later in the group than you would have liked, don’t be hard on yourself! Your first marathon experience will be an excellent benchmark from which to improve.
Do runners walk during a marathon?
It’s not unusual during a long distance race such as a marathon for runners to slow down to a walk on occasion. If it’s your first marathon, it can be reassuring to know that even seasoned runners have to slow to a walk sometimes! Perhaps a goal of yours can be to slowly decrease how many times you slow to a walk.
What is the slowest marathon time you can have?
Most marathons are limited, so the course only stays open for an allocated amount of time – usually 7 hours or less. Before taking part in the event, find out how long the marathon will remain open, and ensure you keep at or above the pace needed to finish in that time.
Why should you run a marathon?
Choosing to take part in a marathon is deciding to live an active, healthy life. Running increases blood circulation, strengthens your cardiovascular system, improves muscle mass and has a huge impact on your mood – leading to a ‘runner’s high’, improved mental state and reduction of stress. Crossing the finish line marks a huge triumph both physically and mentally, and leads to a real (and justified!) feeling of achievement.
